Mỹ Tho was founded in the 1680s by Chinese refugees fleeing Taiwan when the general of the Qing Dynasty Shi Lang defeated the remnants of Southern Ming Dynasty in 1683. The area, at the time, was once part of the Khmer kingdom and it was annexed to Vietnam in the 18th century. The city is named after the My Tho River. In Sino-Vietnamese script, the name is given as 美萩 (beautiful tree).[4] Due to its proximity to Saigon, Mỹ Tho was the traditional gateway to the Mekong Delta. In the 17th century, the city had become one of the biggest commercial hubs in today’s Southern Vietnam.

In 1860s, Mỹ Tho, along with Saigon, was a major strategic city during the French colonial campaign towards Vietnam. In 1862, France’s capture of Mỹ Tho is regarded as the conclusion to the establishment of the French colony of Cochinchina, a development that inaugurated nearly a century of French colonial dominance in Vietnam. During the colonization period, the economy continued to prosper, attracting more immigrants, mainly from Teochew and Minnan. In 1876, Mỹ Tho province was established as one of six provinces in southeast Vietnam

The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong’s base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous guerrilla fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped achieve ultimate military success.

Pick up at 8:00 Am from your hotel lobby . We headed out of the busy city, the Cu Chi tunnels. The Cu Chi region was pivotal in the defeat of the US during the Vietnamese war. Almost completely devastated by continual bombing and napalming overland, many Viet Cong still survived by digging and hiding in underground tunnel networks, initially built in the war against the French. It was also used to counter attack American forces who were bamboozled completely by the system. Large-scale bombing failed to destroy the networks, gassing the tunnels largely failed and American troops called ‘tunnel rats’ sent down were often killed by the inhabitants within. Despite the Viet Cong winning the war, only around 6,000 of the 16,000 who hid survived.

Bike ride start after the trip inside Cuchi tunnels to Cao Dai temple. First stop was the Cao Dai temple. Cao Daism is an attempt to create a super-religion from existing philosophies of both East and West: from Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, Hinduism and Taoism. Founded by Ngo Minh Chieu, who practiced seances to speak to spirits, he was said to receive revelations from Cao Dai (a euphemism for God) in which the tenets of Cao Dai were created. During the Vietnamese-American war, 25-000 members of the Cao Dai army were used to fight the Viet Cong. It is still most prevalent in Vietnam in the Tay Ninh area and Mekong Delta. At the temple, there are four non-compulsory services a day, one of which we were allowed to witness. I, like you, initially thought it sounds a little nuts, but I enjoyed the service, if not for the temple, then for the colours of the temple and those worn by people at prayer. Transfer back to Saigon.

Day 1: Cai Be - Phu An - Dong Hoa Hiep(Overnight at local house by the river – basic accommodation)

- The excursion starts from Cai Be town pier at 10.30am the latest. Upon embarkation on your river junk, you will be welcomed with fresh cotton towels. The cruise will begin with the visit of Cai Be colorful floating market cruising among local barges full of fruits and vegetables. We will then proceed to Phu An hamlet, an untouched beautiful area reflecting some of the best sights the Mekong Delta can offer.
- On the way, stop will be made at some local home factories to observe how rice paste, coconut candies and other regional specialties are made. A delicious lunch will await you at “Le Longanier”, a superb Indochinese villa located by the river, in a lush tropical garden surrounded by fruit plantations.
- After lunch, your sampan will cruise deeper into the country side on smaller canals and arroyos passing under several small traditional bridges made by wood and bamboos. Stops can be made during the cruise to visit some fruit markets and plantations on the banks (bananas, water melon, and longans), an opportunity to make contacts with local inhabitants. Along the river, local houses are still traditionally made of wood and palm tree leaves. On the river banks, you will observe some very large rice fields while cruising between numerous suspended fishing nets, an ancestral way of fishing in the Mekong Delta.
- The cruise will proceed to Dong Hoa Hiep island. You will disembark at an ancient Mandarin house dating from late 19th century located on the river banks. After being greeted by the owners, you will proceed to the check-in formalities and leaded to your room.

- Back on board, we will cruise to Sa Dec. The town is appearing like a little “Venice” with numerous narrow canals, with various kinds of activities on the banks. We will disembark at the local market place, and have a short walk through it. Your lunch will be served at on board.
- In the afternoon, visit of Sa Dec charming and peaceful town, walking along its narrow streets and beautiful old houses dating from the last century, among some old Chinese temples, ancient Dinh, including the primary school of Marguerite Duras famous writer. (See Marguerite Duras novel turned into a famous movie, “The Lover”).
- The excursion will end at around 04pm. Your own private transportation vehicle will await you for your transfer back to Saigon or will proceed further to your next destination.

Day 1: Cai Be - Sa Dec - Can Tho

- The cruise starts at around 10.am from our pier in Phu An hamlet located next to Cai Be town, approximately 2 hours drive south from Saigon.
- Upon embarkation on your sampan you will be welcomed by our crew. After your installation, the cruise will begin with the visit of some local home factories where you will be able to observe how rice paste, coconut candies and other specialties are traditionally made. We will then proceed to Cai Be colorful floating market, cruising among local barges full of fruits and vegetables.
- Your sampan will take direction of Vinh Long and Sa Dec, cruising upstream on the Tien Giang River, one of the two large arms of the Mekong. These evergreen islands among the Mekong River bring about large networks of meandering rivers, criss-crossed with countless arroyos, and remain unknown to many people.
- We will then cruise on a small beautiful canal through water jacinth plantations… You will disembark to take a small rowing boat for a cruise along a narrow canal passing by a local tiny village and fruit plantations. Further on the banks, some dark smokes in the sky will lead us to one of the largest artisanal bricks and tiles factory where you will have an interesting visit.
- Sa Dec town will appear like a little “Venice” with numerous narrow canals.
- You will disembark at the local market place for a guided visit of this charming town, walking along its narrow streets where beautiful French old houses and Chinese temples dating from the last century are numerous. Visit at an ancient house dating from 1890, home of Ong. Huyen Thuy Le, the “Lover” of Marguerite Duras famous novelist.
- Back on board your sampan, your lunch will be served while we will be cruising down to Can Thoalong a beautiful narrow canal, passing under several wooden “monkey bridges” and by tiny typical villages.
- Some stops on the banks will be possible to establish contacts with the local population. A visit will be done at a Cao Daist temple.
- Before sunset, we will have our last stop on the banks arranged at a splendid ancient house or “Nha Co” dating from the early 19th century. After being greeted by the owners, we will cater a candlelight dinner for you, an unforgettable experience in a unique atmosphere.
- After dinner, we will proceed the cruise for approximately one hour until Can Tho. We will moor for the night in a quiet place. Your bed will be ready for your first night on the Mekong river.

Day 2: Cai Rang - Can Tho

- At around 06am, your sampan will slowly start cruising. Your breakfast will be served on board at approximately 07am, while approaching Cai Rang floating market ,actually the largest in the whole Mekong delta. We will pass by countless sampan boats carrying sand, rice, fruits and vegetables, fish, flowers… showing an intense activity on the river.
- Your cruise journey will end at around 10am at Ninh Kieu pier after a visit at Can Tho local market. End of the cruise and services.
